Urban League of Broward County’s Derby at Dusk Gala Celebrates Leadership, Community Impact and Forward Momentum
September 30, 2026 | Fort Lauderdale, FL – High fashion, high energy, and community purpose came together Saturday, September 26, as the Urban League of Broward County (ULBC) welcomed hundreds of businesses, civic, and philanthropic leaders to the 2026 Derby at Dusk Red Gala at the Omni Fort Lauderdale Hotel.
Presented by Sunshine Health, the signature fundraising event celebrated the individuals and partnerships helping advance positive health outcomes throughout Broward County while generating critical support for ULBC’s work in workforce development, entrepreneurship, housing, education, and financial empowerment.
Hosted by Donovan Campbell, sportscaster for WSVN, the evening featured the presentation of three distinguished awards:
- Tripp Scott Pillar of Excellence Award, presented by Tripp Scott, P.A., to Icema Gibbs, Board Officer, VP of Programs, and VP of Corporate Social Responsibility & Impact at JetBlue.
- Margaret Roach Humanitarian Award, presented by JM Family Enterprises, to Juliet Roulhac, Senior Director of External Affairs and Corporate Philanthropy.
- I AM Empowered Award, presented by JPMorgan Chase, to Latayna Bembow, an Urban League program alumna whose journey reflects the transformative impact of ULBC’s programs and services.
The evening also marked the announcement of From the Start Broward, a new local maternal health initiative unveiled by Sunshine Health Chief Marketing Officer Heather Urquides and Agency for Health Care Administration Secretary Shevaun Harris. Building on Florida’s statewide From the Start initiative, the Broward effort will bring together health plans, healthcare providers, community organizations, and local leaders to help more women access prenatal care earlier and stay connected to support throughout their maternal health journey.
Another highlight came when Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) presented Dr. Germaine Smith-Baugh, ULBC President and CEO, with a $30,000 contribution to the organization in honor of her 30 years of service to the Urban League Movement.
“The energy at Derby at Dusk reflected the powerful momentum we are building together across Broward County,” said Dr. Germaine Smith-Baugh, president and CEO of the Urban League of Broward County. “This evening was a powerful reminder that when we come together with purpose, we can create pathways for families to thrive, entrepreneurs to build, and communities to move forward.”
The gala underscored the power of partnership in advancing ULBC’s mission and creating greater access to opportunities for individuals and families throughout Broward County.
