Urban League of Broward County Receives Grant from Truist Foundation to Accelerate Workforce Development Initiatives

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL. July 16, 2026 — The Urban League of Broward County (ULBC) today announced it has been awarded a grant from Truist Foundation. The grant will directly support ULBC’s robust workforce development programs, expanding access to career counseling, job training, and professional certifications designed to foster long-term financial stability and economic mobility for underemployed and unemployed adults in the community.

The $100,000 grant aligns with Truist Foundation’s core commitment to building career pathways to economic mobility that open doors for underemployed and unemployed adults. The grant will bolster several key ULBC workforce initiatives, including the Center for Working Families and AdvanceU, which empower residents to navigate evolving job markets, overcome barriers to employment, and secure livable-wage positions in high-growth industries like Information Technology and Supply Chain Management.

“True economic empowerment begins with access to meaningful, sustainable career opportunities,” said Dr. Germaine Smith-Baugh, president and CEO of the Urban League of Broward County. “This generous contribution from Truist Foundation allows us to scale our workforce pipelines and equip our community members with the critical skills, technical certifications, and comprehensive financial coaching required to thrive in today’s modern economy. We are incredibly grateful for Truist Foundation’s continued support and shared dedication to breaking down structural barriers to wealth building.”

With this funding, ULBC intends to expand its holistic support systems incorporating essential wraparound resources such as resume development, interview preparation, and asset-building strategies alongside technical skill training. By bridging the gap between non-traditional job seekers and local employers, the program aims to create a more inclusive, resilient regional workforce.

“At Truist, our purpose is to inspire and build better lives and communities, and that starts with expanding access to meaningful career pathways,” said Connie Degler, Truist market president for Broward, Palm Beach and Treasure Coast. “The Urban League of Broward County is helping residents build the skills, confidence and financial foundation they need to pursue long-term opportunity. We’re proud to support their work to strengthen Broward County’s workforce and create greater economic mobility across our region.”
