FORT LAUDERDALE –– (June 30, 2022) The Urban League of Broward County received a grant of $25,000 from The Florida Lottery to support its educational programming and Annual College Decision Day.  The event welcomed more than 100 residents to celebrate high school seniors as they announced their plans to attend college or a university after graduation.

Similar to National Signing Day in college football, the annual event took place at the Urban League’s Community Empowerment Center in Fort Lauderdale. The Urban League’s volunteer auxiliary, Young Professionals Network, raised $10,000 and awarded scholarships to three students. Each student received new laptops at the event.

Presented by The Florida Lottery with support from Broward College, Nova Southeastern University, and Office Depot and Walgreens, the event celebrates the Urban League of Broward County’s educational programs that prepare low-income youth for completing high school, attending college, trade schools or the military, and having successful careers. The programs focus on academic and cultural achievements, leadership development, and reducing risky behaviors associated with substance abuse and delinquency. The National Achievers Society (NAS), College Tour, STEM Ready and Asset Building Leads to Excellence are among those programs.

“We are so proud of our students for completing our college access programs and being ready for the world to come,” said Germaine Smith-Baugh, Ed.D., president and CEO of Urban League of Broward County. “We are also thankful to the Dolphins and our presenting sponsors for uplifting our youth and empowering them to think big and fulfill their dreams.”

Nearly more than a third of the students will be attending Broward College after finishing high school, other commitments include:

  • Alabama A&M
  • Bethune-Cookman
