Urban League of Broward County President and CEO Honored For Her Work in Community
Dr. Germaine Smith-Baugh Also To Celebrate Co-Founding National Group
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – July 28, 2017 – Dr. Germaine Smith-Baugh, president and CEO of Urban League of Broward County, was recognized in June for her community work in helping to uplift families out of economic hardship. She also celebrated co-founding a national organization that promotes the personal growth and development of African-American women.
Dr. Baugh received the Women in Leadership award on June 9 from the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis. She was recognized along with other distinguished women in leadership at the local and national levels who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to serve their communities.
In addition, Dr. Baugh celebrated the 25th anniversary of co-founding SISTUHS, Inc. when the organization hosted its national conference on June 9-11 in Miami. As Florida State University students, Dr. Baugh and her classmate, Akiba Jackson, founded the group dedicated to improving the African-American community by mentoring young people through the Girls Scouts of America, Pleasant Place Home for Pregnant Teens, and other organizations and initiatives.
"SISTUHS, Inc. was created to improve the social disposition of underrepresented populations through community service, education, and social services. We salute Dr. Baugh for being a shining example of leadership and a role model for young black women," says Kerri-Jo McLean, Director of SISTUHS, Inc. Since incorporating in 1992, SISTUHS has inducted more than 2,000 members and established 15 chapters in Florida, Georgia and across the Southeast.
“I am so humbled for being recognized by another Urban League affiliate, and I’m so thrilled by all the successes SISTUHS has achieved,” Dr. Baugh said. “All of this is so exciting, inspiring and very special to me, and I’m truly grateful for all my staff and family for supporting my work over the years.”
Dr. Baugh has spent much of her adult life in Broward County working on programs to help the underserved populations gain access to more economic opportunities. She worked her way up at the Urban League of Broward County where she became the president and CEO in 2006 (appointed as the only woman and the youngest administrator to lead an Urban League affiliate in Florida).
Much of her success in helping countless families break the vicious cycle of poverty has involved bringing together public and private partners to listen, talk, and develop policies and programs to confront the community’s toughest issues.
