Urban League of Broward County to Honor Community Leaders at Annual Red Gala

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL. (August 28, 2015) – The Urban League of Broward County, a nonprofit human services organization, will recognize two community leaders at its Red Gala presented by JPMorgan Chase & Co. on Saturday, September 26 at 7:00 pm at Reverend Sam Delevoe Park in the heart of the Sistrunk community in Fort Lauderdale.

Close to 600 guests will attend the highly anticipated, Old Hollywood Glam themed gala, which honors our community’s most dedicated leaders involved in improving the lives of children and families in Broward County. Called “Sistrunk under the Stars,” this year’s Red Gala celebrates 40 years of the Urban League’s service in Broward County, particular in the Historic Sistrunk Corridor, which has undergone considerable public services improvements in recent years.

Longstanding supporter of the Urban League, Tripp Scott, P.A. will present the 2015 Diversity Champion

Award to David Ruiz, president of Florida District at United Parcel Service, Inc. The award is given to an individual who demonstrates commitment diversity and inclusion in business and community.

Wells Fargo, another committed supporter of the Urban League, will present the 2015 Margaret Roach Humanitarian Award to Albert Tucker, vice president for multicultural business development for the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau. The award recognizes individuals who demonstrate leadership in the area of social justice, race relations and compassion through community service.

The final presentation of the evening, the 2015 Star Award presented by Macy’s, Inc., will honor an individual who has achieved a higher level of social and economic self-sufficiency through Urban League’s programs and services.

In addition to honoring distinguished leaders in Broward County, the Red Gala will praise several other "stars" in our community, including leaders, supporters, and clients of the Urban League who have made a difference in our community through our “Breaking the Cycle” of poverty programs. The Red Gala will also be a time to recognize the success of the recent National Urban League Conference held at the Broward Convention Center, during which notable "gifts" were provided to our community, including a new rotating art gallery at the Urban League’s Community Empowerment Center, an assortment of 1,250 backpacks, emergency preparedness and hygiene kits assembled by volunteers for distribution to local community organizations, and a career fair attended by 2,000 South Florida jobseekers.
