Urban League of Broward County Calls for Unity Following
Contentious Mid-Term Election

Fort Lauderdale, FL (Nov. 7, 2018) – The Urban League of Broward County is thankful for the massive voter turnout in yesterday’s election and for all who ran for office and worked hard to make a difference in our community.

The organization congratulates all the candidates who won at the local, state and national races. The agency also congratulates the organizers of the successful local and state ballot measures, especially the passage of Amendment 4, which restores the voting rights of ex-felons.

While many are happy with the outcomes of the election and many are not, the Urban League of Broward County believes that we all -- now more than ever -- have a responsibility to reach out and listen to each other, and to talk with one another in a civil manner.

“We, as a community, have to work together because in the long-run that’s how we’ll solve our toughest challenges,” said Dr. Germaine Smith-Baugh, president and CEO of the Urban League of Broward County. “ More than ever, we have a responsibility to seek common ground on matters that shape our daily lives. ”

As all of us in Broward County and beyond move past a contentious midterm election, we call upon everyone to take action in restoring civility in our community.  Dr. Smith-Baugh added: “The divisions in our country won’t go away unless we all do something about them. We all have to practice the most universal of rules: Treat others the way we want to be treated."

For elected officials, the agency demands that leaders work across political and ideological lines toward compromise on important issues including education, safety, affordable housing, and healthcare. And residents are urged to continue holding political leaders accountable for their policies and campaign promises.
