on an Interactive Health and Wellness Initiative for Kids

FORT LAUDERDALE (November 19, 2013) – Coventry Health Care of Florida, an Aetna company and the Urban League of Broward County have partnered to implement the Coventry Better Health for Kids Program in select Broward County public schools. The program is designed to positively influence the health behaviors of children enrolled in the Urban League’s after school programs and will be offered monthly at the newly developed Dillard Middle and William Dandy Middle. In addition to partnering with the Urban League on the program’s development, Coventry is underwriting the program expenses so that children in the organization’s after school program can participate at no additional cost.

“Coventry is committed to helping all Floridians lead healthier lives, so we are excited to collaborate with the Urban League of Broward County on this initiative,” said Christopher Ciano, president of Coventry’s Florida Operations. “Through this program, we hope to positively impact the students’ nutritional choices and encourage them to find ways to stay active. We also want participants to take what they learn and share it with their family and friends to help spread the message that health matters.”

Coventry Better Health for Kids is a community outreach initiative that focuses on the physical and emotional wellness of children through physical fitness, nutrition and health education programs. Students will have an opportunity to participate in a physical fitness curriculum that includes Zumba, salsa and kickboxing classes. The program also will have a nutritional component covering topics such as reading and understanding ingredient labels and how to make healthier decisions when dining out. In addition, students will participate in a hands-on healthy cooking class at the Publix Aprons Cooking School in Plantation.

Like Coventry, the Urban League of Broward County has a strong commitment to positively impacting the health behaviors of residents in the communities it serves. Through the organization’s services and programs, such as an AIDS prevention and wellness program; a prenatal development program to prevent infant mortality; and the State of Black Broward health initiative, the Urban League works to inform and assist children and families living in Broward County.

“Many children and adults living in greater Fort Lauderdale’s 33311 communities have limited access to healthy food options. This is a large contributing factor to community-wide disparities in obesity and diabetes. It is important that we act as a community convener and educate our children on proper nutrition by exposing them to wellness activities and topics,” said Dr. Germaine Smith-Baugh, president and CEO of the Urban League of Broward County.

The Coventry Better Health for Kids Program begins this month and will run through the end of the school year. For more information about the program, please contact Michelle Johnson, manager of Community Development for Coventry Health Care of Florida at 954-858-3170.
