Miami Heat Champion James Jones Launches the James Jones Legacy Foundation to Empower Children in South Florida
FORT LAUDERDALE (June 28, 2013) – An intimate group of community stakeholders came together on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 to celebrate the introduction of the James Jones Legacy Foundation, founded by Miami Heat champion James Jones. The Foundation, which aims to make a difference in the lives of children who do not have access to positive role models, kicked-off the program with a cocktail party held at the Urban League of Broward County’s Sunshine Health Empowerment Center in Fort Lauderdale.
“The James Jones Legacy Foundation is building partnerships with community stakeholders to provide positive opportunities in lives of children who need it. By building character, confidence, aspirations and most importantly hope, we begin to lay the foundation for a better future," said Jones.
Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel and City of Fort Lauderdale Commissioner Bobby DuBose were in attendance. Other attendees included Urban League board members and executives from American Express, His House Children’s Home, MetLife and Sunshine Health.
Founded by James Jones and his wife Destiny, the James Jones Legacy Foundation provides an opportunity for targeted children ages 11-14 to participate in a summer training camp. This year, the Foundation has forged a partnership with the Broward Sheriff’s Office to expand the Crew 22 Training Camps to Broward which will combine team activities and individual empowerment sessions.
“We are proud to host the introduction event for the James Jones Legacy Foundation,” said Dr. Germaine Smith-Baugh, president and CEO of the Urban League of Broward County. “James is an exceptional leader and aside from the possibilities he has provided to the Urban League, he is going to continue to transform the lives of children living in South Florida,” she said.
By Fall of 2015, the Foundation plans to launch other comprehensive program services including Squad 22 Mentoring & Leadership Program, JJLF Alumni Association and the Academic Enrichment Programs. This unique college preparedness programming and experience, focusing on core curricula and social development models, will include campus tours, leadership training, self-expression workshops, entrepreneurship and team building.
