$50,000 Citi Foundation Grant Supports Urban League of Broward County Individual Development Accounts Program and the Center for Working Families
FORT LAUDERDALE (August 7, 2012) — The Urban League of Broward County and Citi announced an expansion of their longstanding partnership to provide more underserved residents of South Florida with access to asset-building opportunities; job training and placement; and other social and economic services. A $50,000 contribution from Citi Foundation supports the Urban League’s Individual Development Accounts (IDA) program and the Center for Working Families.
“The fundamental goal of our economic services programs is to improve the financial health of underserved families in Broward County,” said Dr. Germaine Smith-Baugh, President and CEO of the Urban League of Broward County. “Citi's remarkable contribution complements our new Community Empowerment Center by allowing us to expand our programs and services that help residents create assets, build income and become economically stable."
“Citi and the Urban League of Broward County share a common goal of ensuring that low income families have access to opportunities that enable them to achieve economic security,” said Barbara Romani, Citi Community Development South Region Director. “Our partnership goes back almost two decades and includes philanthropic support, as well as contributions of time and talent by Citi employees, who add value to the Urban League’s services. Sohail Kothari, Area Manager for Citi Commercial Banking Group, currently is a member of the organization’s Board of Directors.”
The Urban League of Broward County’s IDA program is an asset-building and educational opportunity that includes both a 8:1 matched savings account and a series of quarterly financial literacy workshops. The accounts enable people who otherwise would not have access to asset-building services to save toward the purchase of a first home, continued postsecondary education or establishing a small business. The workshops enable clients to make optimal use of this and other financial services by teaching good budgeting and savings techniques.
The Urban League of Broward County offers its IDA program through its Center for Working Families, which assists residents with a range of social and economic issues. Other offerings of the Center include job training and placement; access to public benefits, tax credits and financial aid; and homebuyer assistance. The Center for Working Families partners with the Children’s Services Council of Broward County, Hispanic Unity of Florida, Jim Moran Foundation and the United Way of Broward County to help low-income residents achieve long-term economic stability.
