MISSION STATEMENT

Founded in 1975 as the 104th affiliate of the National Urban League, the Urban League of Broward County is a community based organization dedicated to assisting African Americans in the achievement of social and economic equality. 

The fundamental objective of the Urban League of Broward County is to enable those who are moving toward the mainstream to achieve economic self-reliance and to enjoy their rights as equal citizens under the law. 


OUR STRATEGY
The Urban League of Broward County employs the following three pronged strategy to implement the mission of our movement

Youth and Education Empowerment
Ensuring all our children are well educated and prepared for economic self-reliance through early childhood literacy, academic achievement, scholarship and youth development programs.


Economic Empowerment
Helping people to attain economic self-sufficiency through job training, homeownership, entrepreneurship and wealth accumulation.

Health and Community Empowerment 
Building healthy and safe communities.  Eliminating health disparities through prevention, healthy eating and fitness as well as empowering people to take an active role in determining the direction, quality of life and public policy in their communities.

OUR HISTORY
Founded by a diverse group of community leaders to alleviate some of the racial tensions brought on by forced desegregation of the county’s public schools, the Urban League of Broward County, Inc., was given affiliate status in 1975 as the National Urban League’s 104 affiliate.

 
OUR MOVEMENT
The Urban League of Broward County, (ULBC) was established in 1974 and began operations in 1975. The ULBC employs 66 full time employees and directly serves 6,443 people annually. The ULBC is widely regarded as one of the most progressive Urban League affiliates in the nation.
 
The National Urban League was established in 1910,  Headquartered in New York City, NUL spearheads the non-partisan efforts of the 100 local affiliates. The National Urban League is the nation’s oldest and largest community-based movement devoted to empowering African Americans.
